Niek Veraart, AICP, ENV SP is Vice President with Louis Berger, based in New York. Throughout his career he has leveraged data and related applications for urban, environmental and infrastructure planning. Projects have included award-winning pedestrian data simulation for the National September 11 Memorial, retail facilities, transit stations and airports. He has conducted research on the use of smart data for resilience and disaster recovery under contract to the Institute of Water Resources, the research arm of the US Army Corps of Engineers and co-authored several resilience handbooks, including for the U.S. Naval Facilities Command and Transit Cooperative Research Program. He is currently supporting clients with the development of Smart City concepts leveraging the use of both public and commercial data and integrating innovative technologies for increased resilience, sustainability and economic development. Mr. Veraart has an MSc in engineering from Wageningen University in the Netherlands with a background in urban and environmental planning and has presented at the Annual Conferences of the Transportation Research Board, the American Planning Association and the Infrastructure Security Partnership. His research has been published by the Transportation Research Board, National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.
